reduces calamity occurrence, slows down civ card purchase. Recommended for games with 5 or more players.
If you are using the Western Expansion map or playing with 8 players it is a must have.
Commodities are more suited to Eurogame designs: I used the idea by making new cards with more historically accurate commodities.
Good only for Civilization. Replaced by Advanced Civilization when that became avail.
This is worth having because it makes trading more important and dilutes the calamities a little. The game is long enough as it is, so having the calamities come less frequent is a good thing.
Must-have expansion trade cards for both Civilization and Advanced Civilization games
A must have. Prevents card draw predictability and some gamey tactics with the trade cards
These trade cards are useful for the 6 and 7 player games because they will reduce the instances of trade card decks running out, thus allowing more resources into the hands of players, less often missed buys, less bounces on the AST track, and thus speed up the game. However, they are technically not necessary. Also, if you have the Advanced Civ trade card set I would pass on these, since the Adv Civ has the same cards just about 12 more in total.
I think I would only recommend these cards be used in the 7 player base game. One drawback I noticed was the calamities came up less often with 6 players, which made the game faster yes but also slightly less fun.
