Holy gods! We haven't even finished our first and already we know this was a great buy. Everyone liked this better than the base game. The players had more fun, and the keeper is enjoying it too. Which is perfect. Just what we had hoped for.
I admit, the base game can feel horribly depressing at times - when the players are trapped in a terrible situation with no way to heal. This expansion adds a few healing cards, which is just enough to give people hope (but not enough to truly turns things easy for the players). At the same time, it also makes the plot more like an RPG and not as much a railroad from point A to B to C.
Yes, there are a lot of cards. Yes, they are added to the copious amounts of cards from the base game. But it is worth the set up.
Our first game came down to an epic battle. The Keeper had two big baddies out on the board, our characters were valiantly fighting back - Mandy kept soaking damage like a tank! She survived for far longer than anyone expected. We would have won the game - except Mandy was cursed and the Keeper had her re-roll... and she failed on the reroll. And then next turn she finally went down and the Keeper won.
Still, the game felt much closer, the Keeper and the Players were much more engaged, and neither felt the other had a huge lead in what was going on.
As I said before, this is exactly what we wanted out of the game. We will never go back to just the base game. And we will be bringing this out as often as we can.
This is a fantastic expansion which really pushes the boundaries of the game as well as adding some cool new monsters. You won't regret getting this!
