Nice additions to the base game with very little rules overhead.

Village Inn is not as essential as Port, but boy is it a great expansion. It adds variety to the game, the fun beer commodity, the fun of having your family members meet friends... it's pretty great. I always play with both Inn & Port, but if I was teaching someone who might get easily overwhelmed, I'd leave out Inn but never Port. This is the replayabiliy expansion and I think it is quite critical to the game, as sometimes the game can become samey after too many plays, but it's nowhere as game-changing as Port.

This expansion is useful for the 5th palyer material. Otherwise the real expansion part is not so convincing and can better be left out. The 2nd expansion "Port" is much better, gives a real improvement to the travelling part and adds a nice new element.

Rating with the base game.

I'd play this with the base almost every time, as it makes the game more interesting by providing end-game bonuses that are player unique (and can provide some direction to players who otherwise feel that there are too many options to simultaneously pursue).

The downside is that with the additional cubes that get added to the board even if the player count remains the same, the game takes even longer (and the game probably plays a little long for its weight as it is).

A nice expansion! Adds 1 craft location, 1 extra location (inn) aaaaaaand the option for a 5th player. The cards (inn) are a nice way to mix things up though I think they're a bit too swingy. Some of the cards are ridiculously good for certain people while others are just meh. You might end up with gold, you might end up with garbage. You do have enough information to make an informed guess before you go there, but still it's.. too big of a swing. I think. Maybe? shrug

I do like the expansion and I recommend using it.

Thought the cards are too powerful, but ok, I played only once and with the expansion, but it appears to me that you can't ignore the cards entirely to win the game.

Edit: Played a second time and this time I could enjoy the game with this expansion a little bit more.
