ATS: ETA was played as the 2-player Revival variant in a group that hates needless "Take-That!" mechanics. Bear this in mind because it heavily skews the review.
Let's get right to it. What's usable?
PROS: • The Ludo race is pretty neat, albeit a bit chance-based. • The other two races are either a giant middle finger to your opponent or kinda worthless. • Dual-color special cards can be neat.
CONS: • More conflict cards, as if ATS needed more ways for you to lose friends. Really, that's all they exist for. They're not handled well at all. ATS conflict feels like pure "take that!" with zero skill, timing, planning, or diplomacy. These cards are probably the worst. You can spread infestations and literally steal either their money or their locations. • Random inspections are incredibly shitty in an otherwise comfy game. They just randomly fuck or help certain players. Especially biased with regard to some races. • Cheesy real life inserts of board game reviewers. Can we stop worshiping people who give their opinions on the internet, please? • While the special dual colors are neat, they're also bland in practice. • Extra players is worthless completely. The game slogs to a crawl after 4. Don't put your friends through this. Play a game actually made to service 5+. • Requires the Ambassadors expansion as well to add what little value it actually has. I shouldn't have to buy another expansion to your game to make use of the one I bought. I actually grabbed the entire ATS collection at the same time and this one took a while to notice.
You're only buying this for the dual color locations, trust me. Everything else in this is about shitting on your friends as hard as possible with zero skill involved. It reduces a comfy station-sim and euro game into a trashy, tacky game of pseudo-uno.
If you have Ambassadors, this is a nice add as well. Getting a little bit of everything is a type of expansion I wish companies did more often. Con: once you start to add this in, Among The Stars becomes much more of a pain to sort/set up.
