This game is fiddly and unintuitive and rules-heavy with lots of edge cases…and yet I love it. The package is such a delight, the art and graphic design oozes theme and fantasy cosiness (even if I wish there was more card art variety) and I will probably never get rid of it even if it doesn't get played much.
But I've been very hesitant to show it to anyone else as I fear they will bounce off it and not appreciate the things I do, and as a result sour my own experience. I'm well aware this is not for everyone, and looks can be deceiving as it's a very heavy game. But the fact that I was willing to stick out the teach, play the game multiple times solo and buy the expansions, shows that it's a bit of a special game for me - even though I know it could do with some streamlining.
Each character's deck is a puzzle with an optimal solution leaving little room for experimentation. The mechanics demand an excess of cognitive load and break what little immersion can be experienced via the unfortunately sparse artwork. I feel like this game had a lot of potential that was squandered by tuning the mechanics to be so tight that they choke out all the fun.
I worked on the game development. I enjoy highly the combination of deck building (with different combos for each hero) and cooperative adventure game play. It is a first for me, that the cooperative game can be so hard and engaging at the same time. Mistfall provides me with excellent gaming experience!
Cooperative deck builder fantasy adventure game. Quite complex for a card-based game.
Pros:
- Artwork: there is not much, but what is there looks good.
- Each character has a unique deck of cards.
- Each time you have to face a different mix of enemies and encounters which create a new challenge.

Language dependent.
Quite some expansions available.
Underrated game.
Good solo game (best if you control two characters).
The standalone reimplentation "Mistfall: Heart of the Mists" has some nice improvements that can be added here as well.
The rulebook is meticulously written and covers a lot of special cases. However, the rulebook is not that fun to read. There is also an updated 2.1 fan version: https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/230460/rulebook-21
In the first edition there were quite some errors on the cards. See errata: https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/229602/mistfall-consolidated-faq-errata
Cons:
- Kickstarter exclusives.
- Small artwork.
- Same artwork for basic hero cards. This makes scanning your cards more exhausting because you do not see what a card is all about at a quick glance.

- The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game : complex, some similar mechanics, high difficulty: about finding the right build for your deck and scenario.
- Too Many Bones: mix & mash of encounters, adventure with abstracted combat board, different heroes with unique abilities, quite complex.
- Sentinels of the Multiverse: Too much side-effects and book-keeping (play the App instead).
