A little too much counting the same things over and over...

Too long for my taste. Even the computer version felt like it dragged on and on.

Holy shit... this game is crazy. I like it, I think it is very cool, but I will rarely have the fortitude to slug through it when I could be playing 7 or 8 really good games in the same amount of time. That being said, I would like to get better at this game. UPDATE: no, I am actually just happy with the memory.

2010-05-07 The game takes simply too long for what it is. Either the technologies should be cheaper or the game should end after a certain number of rounds. Now you might end up playing for hours without advancing a single step.

2016-04-14 Advanced Civilization is a behemoth of a game, at least for the time and space it requires. The basic mechanics are not too difficult so it can be played with anyone willing to invest a whole day in it.

The absolutely most succulent meat of the game are the trading negotiations, and you have to enjoy this to like the game. The map/board are secondary to the game and only provide means to track the progress with some tactical elements. I like the atmosphere in which you have to choose whether you trust someone or not. Even the rules say that you do not have to tell the whole truth.

A thing that can be rather difficult for new players to live with is the multiple downfalls of your civilization. You can expect your empire to crumble into pieces a few times during a game and you have to start building it anew. However there are now real catchup mechanics other than this, and sometimes you already know the winner after a couple of hours but you still have many to go until someone triggers the game end.

Despite enjoying the trading, I think the game repeats itself too much and there are too many rounds when you do not make any real progress. You are slowly grinding yourself to the next level. Getting there is fun but the crawling in between is not rewarding.
