I've only played it a few times (and only solo), but here's why I like it:
- Each adventure has a fairly distinctive feel to it. Along with the main story cards, a portion of the adventure decks are swapped out.
- Story is enjoyable as each card has it's own flavor text and a given quest or monster is well themed.
- You have a decent number of heroes to choose from and each is reasonably distinct and offers an interesting backstory
- Hero does have a noticeable amount of growth over the adventure with acquiring skills and equipment
- Combat is a satisfying puzzle. With the addition of the new combat tokens in the UB expansion, each monster type will have it's own set of tokens and present it's own puzzle. Enemy combat is now more scripted, but as such can be mitigated as your hero grows in skill.
- Combat is also not overly long, as it will usually end in 2-3 rounds
- Decent amount of variability with being able to swap out skill sets and the amount of equipment is decent.
- Rule set is manageable. It offers a good amount of depth without bogging you down in to much fiddlyness.
- Solo game play can be accomplished in a couple hours after a couple plays.
- Set up and tear down is not too involved.
Cons:
- One of the adventures is not well suited for solo play as written, but there are variants that seem to make it more interesting.
- Can have a decent amount of luck to it if you prefer a more strategic game.
In summary, it's an adventure game with a well done theme is that meaty enough to keep my interest while not bogging me down in the minutiae of the rules. I probably would not recommend it as strongly without the unbreakable bonds expansion, but it's quite enjoyable with it.
Thoughts on Scenarios:
- Margath is great with 1 character.
- The Locust Swarm does not seem well suited to 1 character. 6 scorched earth tokens isn't enough. Try with 2 characters.
- The Corpse King is not well suited to solo play. Most likely best with 3 or 4 characters
Generic fantasy theme, but solid adventure game. The designed pacing seems to reward ruthless efficiency and luck rather than encouraging exploration. I've found that reducing the cost of adventure gems from two to one action gives you enough time to prepare for the final boss without causing any imbalances (except maybe for advanced players). When playing this way, the game typically ends with me or the final boss winning with 1 HP remaining.
Not worth playing without Unbreakable Bonds expansion.
Sold because I felt I have seen just about everything this game has to offer.
Hard to get to the tabler, but loads of fun once it's there.
