The game is called "Schachmati Kreposti" in Russian and was first mentioned in 1772. A board from the 19th century is shown in the Chess Museum that was founded by W. Dombrowski in Sankt Petersburg. In 1855 there was a Fortress Chess Club in London, England. Ilya Vladimir Lenin, the creator of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, was an enthusiastic player. His oldest sister, Anna Ilyinitsha remembers: "Volodya played Fortress Chess with his father and brother Sasha. We girls played less often. I remember an autumn evening when we all - the father and us, the three older ones - impassionately gave up ourselves to Fortress Chess." -- So, for good communists this game is just a MUST.
