I can't wait for this one to come out. Gameplay is very immersive in the horror movie theme. It's the best example of this genre that I've played!
Played a demo of this game at GenCon and it was a lot of fun. Recommend this if you like Colt Express and horror movies. Plays pretty quickly, and is an interesting setup. Good ability for replayability.
Just play tested the game and it was a lot of fun. I died, but it was a fun challenge. I truly look forward to playing it again.
So. Much. Fun. We just played it for the first time tonight. I was the only survivor but we won! What's important in games for me and my family is that they be cooperative because I'm unreasonably competitive. This is a genuinely delightful co-op game. The art is pretty, the game play is easy to pick up but constantly complicated enough that it's still fun. Each round is different because you're pretty much playing a campy 80s horror flick. I've never joined in on a kick starter, but I'm all about it for this.
Playing this game takes me right back to when I was younger, watching 80s/90s horror movies with my friends. We all would yell at the screen and say, "If that were me, I'd do 'this' instead of 'that.'" Nightfall at Camp Havenwood gives us the chance to do just that. Make decisions while being chased around a horror movie scene by one of those monsters.
Game play is simple once you understand the structure. You and your fellow campers take turns performing actions to help you defeat the 'horror' that is after you. Walk, Run, Hide, or Search for weapons and items to help you fight off the evil coming your way. After so many events, the 'horror' triggers, and begins to pursue you. Stay alive, meet the objective, and maybe, just maybe, you can outlast whatever is creeping up slowly behind you...
Like most horror films the game uses for inspiration, it is difficult to survive. If you die, you still get to watch the events unfold (and comment what you would have done); but if you do, the excitement and sense of accomplishment is tangible!
The creators have definitely done their homework, and have created a fun, and fast-paced game that really draws players in. The artwork is unique. The concept is original. And, it even comes in a pine box (coffin-joke anyone?)
Really well done!

I've had the chance to play Camp Havenwood a few times now and I have to say that it gets more fun each time I play it. The game is set in a 1985 summer camp horror movie. Being that I'm a product of the 80s I was in love with the game before I even touched a card! My first play through I died almost immediately once the horror was revealed - but watching the game progress (without me ????) was still fun. It also gave me a chance to get a better understanding of the mechanics of the game. My 3rd play through I had a good enough understanding of the mechanics to be able to come up with a great strategy. But the addition of a traitor (horror's accomplice) gave the game an awesome new dynamic that made me have to rethink my strategy, especially since I was the traitor. I never thought I would enjoy trying to kill everyone off so much, but I really enjoyed it! So much so I'm rethinking my life choices.
The programmable mechanics of the game were a new thing to me, but I quickly figured out how the game worked. The characters create scenes using their character action cards and communicating with the other players so they can all finish the episode objectives and kill the horror. One of my favorite aspects is that while you and the other players are creating the scenes you don't know what the horror is going to do. This adds some difficulty to strategizing, but in my opinion the mystery and chance are what make the game so enjoyable. If you're still alive after the horror runs amuck you have to reevaluate your situation and figure out how to stay alive before the horror makes another apperance.
The artwork is pretty awesome too. It's visually appealing and I found myself admiring some of the artwork, instead of paying attention to the game, a few times. I can't wait to see how the finished product looks.
The replay value for Camp Havenwood is extremely high. The options for horrors, locations, characters, episodes, and scenes means you'll probably never have the same game experience twice. One play through might leave you wondering why the horror gains so much strength from a creepy doll and the next makes you wonder why the van keys were burried in the bottom of the grave yard, and more so why is the grave yard so close to the nurse's station. Really with the grave yard so close I would rethink visiting that nurse if you live through your first encounter!
I can honestly say I love this game. The base game has so much going for it that the possibilities for expansions and sequals is almost limitless. I can't wait to see what blood splattering ideas the team at DNA Games come up with next!
I have not been compensated with money or product nor has the promise of any compensation been made in any way for my completion of this review. All opionions expressed in the above review are based solely on my experiences playing demo versions of the game.
I have never played this style of game before. I had the pleasure of trying it out at Fear the Con X this summer. Having been a long time fan of the horror movie genre, I felt this held true to the style very well. The mechanics appeared well thought out and easy to understand. I look forward to the release of this game and will be buying it at the earliest possible point in time that I can!
"This game is amazeballs!!! Great mechanics, tone, and feel. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole play session. Hell, I died, but the game was so GOOD, I ain't even mad." --J.C. LaCroix, Gaming with Scott
