The Border Fights variant (see Michael's site for the new board and rules) is better than the base game. This is not to say that the base game is bad, just that the Border Fights version is much better. At the sacrifice of a little simplicity and elegance considerable depth and challenge are added to good effect. Also much more confrontational than the base game.
