I have only played solo so far, but I'm LOVING this extra layer of brain-burning thinkiness. It gives you a use for your old tricks and lets you boost your new ones. It allows new ways of breaking all the rules. By all means, if you have the base game, this should be added after a few plays!
And the solo mode is amazing. It requires a fair amount of learning and upkeep, but eventually you can just consult the back page of the manual when it is the Heir's turn.
