Tried this in tandem with the Dragon Engulfed the Sun. The system is really good, although I have found it very difficult to make much progress across the DMZ (as the North Koreans). I appreciate the research done for this game, which appears to be thorough for a modern hypothetical topic.
Dragon Engulfed was better, but this is still a home run.
This game may be a hidden gem; great system with much interaction between ground-air-naval-missile-SF, at just the right level of detail. And a lot of FUN -- plays smoothly, high body counts, action can be all over the map due to missile shots.
Nice map, and Eric Harvey hit an absolute Grand Slam on the unit counters; clearly delineated information, and perfect harmony in the counter COLOR schemes. A true VISUAL TREAT, especially for a magazine game. BRAVO! Do 5 more like this, and take it to the Western Europe theater!
Played a few times and enjoyed it. I like the topic and the game has enough chrome to keep me interested. I was planning on moving on to the Dragon against the Sun but I moved in to other projects.
Beta tested this one also. Will be interesting to combine with Dragon/Sun. My rating here is a 8 compared to Dragon-Sun. The reason is this is more of a traditional slugfest. Dragon-Sun has an elegance that gives it an edge. Personally I would give this a 10 and Dragon-Sun an 11 but my amp doesn't go that high.
Seems imbalanced against the North Koreans at first but then the Chinese get into the action, and things start to get tense. I like the progenitor game (The Dragon Engulfs the Sun) better, but the system the designer developed meshes together very well. There's air, sea, and land combat all adequately detailed and researched in a single magazine game. Hope to see more games using this system in the future.
A very nice magazine wargame on the future hypothetical Second Korean War between north and south (allied with China and US respectively) - with comprehensive (land, naval and air), colorful military asset counters, beautiful standard-size map. Combat system is refreshing with a % tally of the combat values (attacker's vs. defender's). Combat results are quite varying, with different number of combat step losses. Initial impression is favorably strong. Special units include missiles, commandos, helicopters, and cyberwar. The air unit interception rules are quite simple but nice, alleviating a lot of burden on the air aspects.
