Halls of Hegra

The rulebook is particularly bad. Where it's not vague it's ambiguous. On top of that it lacks an index. On the table, the game is surprisingly dry and rather fiddly. As this game is often compared to This War of Mine and Robinson Crusoe, I was hoping for something along those lines but taken in a wargame direction. Nope. This turned out to be an abstract, war-themed euro, and an experience best described as "moving cubes and disks on a board".

This is the best type of Euro: it has theme! You are trying to mobilize a force and prepare your fortress defenses for a siege from Germany. The game is worker placement, and you just don't have enough workers and supplies to do everything you would like: shovel snow and uncover bonuses, repair equipment, fire the guns, man the walls, go on supply raids, and so much more.

Meanwhile, the German defenses start mounting and then they are hitting you with air bombardments, artillery shelling, and infantry assaults and your morale is falling and your people are getting wounded and dying.

There are more cards than turns, so you will only use a fraction of them, which adds replayability to the game, as does the draw bags.

• Real theme packed into every moment and every decision makes this game stay with you long after it leaves the table; You're constantly pushing your luck and hedging your bets... there's so much that's out of your control and that fits the source material very well.

• Since the game follows a real story, it is a bit on rails as far as replayability goes so it may not hit the table super frequently.
