Interesting simplified ruleset. So far, I enjoy the streamlined nature of a turn, and the semi-coop nature of the game. We'll see.
This brings back the joys of 1st edition Necromunda, in a simplified but not simplistic rule set. For me, the games hits the sweet spot between Necromunda or Infinity on the high game-weight side and Rangers of Shadow Deep on the low side. The scenario generation is incredible: (2x d66 + 1d6 charts for each game). The campaign system is fun, and neatly solves the runaway leader issue that plagues many similar games. The setting is compelling enough that I found myself immediately getting attached to some of my characters, even though most of them are clearly... doomed. The Doomed delivers exactly the experience it aspires to provide. I could not be more pleased!
A fresh take on futuristic skirmishes. The accent is clearly more on fun than simulation in a good way.
Good game, horrible rulebook
The ruleset is simple, but still offers depth and choice. The missions, goals, and monsters are varied and keep things fresh. The customization of crews is open ended enough to give freedom, but not without some guidelines. Of particular boon is the semi-cooperative nature of the game. It keeps both players engaged at all times with serious risk/reward choices.
My biggest issue with the game is actually the rulebook itself. Lots of content, looks beautiful, and the hard cover double bookmark is choice. That said the layout leaves a great deal to be desired. Playing through several games we found ourselves spending a disproportionate amount of time simply trying to find things like what a special rule meant, or what was the sequence to resolve a given effect. Especially as relevant items may not be adjacent to each other in the book. Most of this could simply be handled by a reference sheet with campaign sequence, and a glossary of special rules/keywords. So by no means a deal breaker.
I would recommend this game to anyone looking for more freedom in a minis game, just take a little extra time to tab your book ahead of time. ;)
fast, simple und funy
