Excellent game to encourage student engagement with history. Serves as an excellent warm-up for longer Reacting to the Past games.
I ran a session of Monumental Consequence at Games, Learning, and Society 2022. It was fantastic! The rule set is easy for organizers to learn and set up. Players can literally walk up, pick up a card, get a short (5 min) orientation, and begin playing. From a game-based learning perspective, it's a great tool for:
- Course Icebreaker
- Faculty Orientation
- Discussion Spur The game works well on its own, but the Curriculum Guide is also well spent if you're going to use it in a classroom: https://cmichpress.com/product/monumental-consequence-curriculum-guide/
I have used a prototype of this game in my college classes several times and it never fails to engage the students and get them thinking about deep issues in ways other interactions fail to do.
It also primes them for more extensive role-playing games that I use later in the semester.
I often use this game on the first day of class for my undergraduate history courses. It never fails to impress. Fifteen minutes in, people who didn't know each other before are giving impromptu speeches, negotiating, and running around the classroom.
Great game as an icebreaker for conferences. Its kinda a great academic mini-larp for non-larpers. Fun!
