Europa Universalis: The Price of Power (Deluxe Edition) (2023) is an incredibly detailed 4X strategy board game that lets you step into the shoes of a European leader from the Middle Ages through to the Age of Revolutions. With a complexity rating of 4.83/5, this game isn't for the faint of heart, but for those who love a deep and challenging experience. You'll guide your nation over three centuries, making pivotal decisions in diplomacy, exploration, and warfare. Each country you play has its own distinct set of challenges and opportunities, offering a unique experience every time.

The game does a fantastic job of capturing the spirit of the popular Paradox Interactive video game series. You'll be managing resources, playing cards strategically, and expanding your empire on the map board. But it's not just about conquering territories; you'll also need to develop your nation's internal affairs, build diplomatic relationships, and recruit advisors to help steer your strategy. The goal is to build the most successful empire, and you'll earn points for various achievements like owning provinces, exploring new lands, winning wars, and completing secret objectives.

The components in this Deluxe Edition are top-notch, adding to the game's immersive experience. Everything feels carefully crafted, from the intricate game pieces to the detailed map board. Some players have mentioned that the status mat could be a bit thicker and that more dice would be helpful, but these are minor quibbles in an otherwise impressive package. Europa Universalis: The Price of Power is a grand, sweeping game that delivers on its promise of an epic historical experience, perfect for strategy game enthusiasts who have been waiting for a board game that truly captures the essence of European history.

I love the scope...but too much is abstracted that is handled in detail in both the original boardgame and the computer versions - stuff that's important to me, like the scope of military operations. On top of that, there are resources (cubes, religious markers, etc) that are limited in quantity which simply don't make sense. Finally, the actions allowed to each nation appear to be too few to allow for enough 'fat' to allow for sufficient colonization or engagement in wars.

Beyond these issues, there are a fair number of things which I want to tinker with to make it into the game I desire. It would help if there were a couple more player sets of components, so that the Eastern European map could actually be used. I would like to play around with mechanisms to randomize the event choices for a given scenario better as well.
