often there are "dead" cards that neither player can achieve, and no mitigation of what is on offer in the discovery row.
The rulebook is bad. Difficult to read, awful font and color choices.
There are better two-player duel games.

A 2-player set collection type of game that plays in 20 minutes. It works really well and is super solid. I really like this one, but I am not sure there is a whole lot of variety from game to game. The different goals from game to game is what will keep you trying different strategies, but I am not sure it is enough over time.
What a fresh take on a two player game, with a tight card drafting system anchoring the whole design. The balance of better cards on the slower selection row works great too. I'm less interested in the prediction cards, which tended to swing just 1-2 points to a player when added. We actually dropped using those in the last game.
Points for pairs, points for triples, points for # of copies of a card, points for achievements, and --- perhaps an innovative element --- points for predicting which player will have more or fewer of some things at game's end. You can go in several different directions, although the pure victory point cards are so valuable and so easy to obtain that they generally get snatched as soon as they show up.
