I'm a huge fan of Oceans. I really liked Evolution: Climate, but found it tough to get to the table (I mostly play it on Steam now). I think Oceans does a great job taking some of the "bite" out of the Evolution engine, making for less potential for "meanness," either real or perceived. I also absolutely love the "Deep" deck comprised of completely unique traits you can add to your species. And, of course, the included solo mode means I have no trouble getting it to the table anymore! Super happy I finally picked this up after a few years of wishlisting it.
5/5
Oceans is the better version of Evolution & Evolution Climate. This game is still mean, but it is less mean, & it is mean in a fair way. This game is for card gamers 100%. the engine building here is not for the weak. This game requires you to adapt to every situation or you perish. Dying is okay because the game is about scoring points. The secret scoring works very well. Best 3-5P. 200+ plays.
Legends of the deep is okay. It adds crazy powers, no extra rules, but breaks the theme of the game. The AI is not very challenging, but works well (with limited events). The AI introduces new starting rules which can & should be played with all versions of Oceans (fish zones = 30, 10, 30, 30).
Nature seems promising; however, it is very expensive for what it is. Sort of sad how this company keeps abandoning the games of the past & not rewarding previous game owners at all.
A coral reef expansion for Oceans would be a welcome addition.
1-6 players, card management, hidden victory points creating species.

I also own Evolution, which is similar in many ways, but oceans feels more rewarding and also much less predictable, especially once you include the various "deep" cards. There are SO many combinations and interactions that it can be hard to track them all and we sometimes have to decide as a group how to interpret the rules, but I generally like this game's mechanics and pacing. It also adheres less to the biological realities of marine ecosystems, which is actually to the game's advantage.
