Great successor for Wingspan that keeps it's good line action mechanics (cave exploring in Wyrmspan). I really like the way how benefits matters in this game. Especially guild is great addition. Basic card game problems still exist and you might have to be lucky to gain specific cards. But man, I'm hungry to play more with dragons!
It's a bit low interaction and it feels a bit on the lucky side if you get the correct pieces to start into the game properly.
Played 4 matches so far with 2 players. The game is gorgeous, the material even without the premium upgrade is great. With a little bit more interaction and reduction of slow starts (refilling the open cards instantly could help, so people would have more options to pick instead of blind picking a lot). I'm sure there was a design decision there to only refill at the end of a round, I just don't necessarily agree.
Overall a very good game that should be a staple for everyone who can't get into the bird theme of wingspan.
It's missing some elements that make Wingspan great, but it also adds elements of its own that make it a unique and fresh experience.
I great "expansion" to the Wingspan family. Great mechanics with the Dragon Guild.
Hey do you like Winngspan? What if Wingspan gave you better control of your engine? Well that’s Wyrmspan. It’s good, but has some of the same faults as Wingspan and won’t win any rewards for interactivity.
A bit more “thinky” than wingspan, but similar enough if you’ve played it. It’s got a lot of differences that make the experience great overall, but I still like wingspan a bit more (and wingspan Asia!)
I felt this improved upon wingspan which is a good game to begin with. I felt the engine building come through more with this version. We also saw some big turns chaining a bunch of actions together.
Played twice at Tantrumcon. First time - table hated it. Second time - table loved it. First - definitely better at smaller player counts and if you hated Wingspan, you're not going to like it. The really great stuff about Wyrmspan is: (1) all resources are always available (2) shorter downtime (but not short enough to allow for high player counts (3) guilds are super-exciting and do add a bit of interaction (4) caves a fantastic twist. The theming, however, is much weaker in this one, which is going to make it harder to teach to people who've never played wingspan. Meat-eaters go on top, gold-hoarders in the middle, and crystal-hoarder on the bottom just doesn't feel as intuitive as "pelicans eat fish and go in water." I also don't know if the hatchlings really feel worthwhile... I'd have to play more to see how I feel about them. So overall, mixed feelings - I enjoyed it and I think more mechanically-inclined people will prefer it over Wingspan, while people who like thematic integration & appreciate ease of teaching will like it a lot less. Also, some people just like the excitement of rolling dice.
Liked it better than Wingspan. Combos and engines felt a little more satisfying. Tho, I wish it didn’t have the rondel. That felt like an expansion, and one thing too many. This game without that would be perfect.
