A slightly cut down version of the original 1829 and although it may indeed be improved, I still prefer the original I think. Much more gentle and not as cuthroat as most other 18xx games but a good introduction to the genre. The other units make it playable with more players though
My first 18xx (albeit 18xx-lite), and it was an enjoyable experience. Need to play more...

Too gentle, I prefer the 1830 branch, feels like you can't influence the game enough with no train rush, more control on company order and par prices.
Game of all units
Not as good as the second unit, there is not a lot of competition on important routes.
Very badly written rules combined with ridiculously complicated gameplay with stupid tiles and lots of non-events makes this a no-replay-game. Don't bother. The fact that it's related to the fine 1830 does not seem to help.
- Shorter than most 18xx. Much more focus in tile laying screwage than in stock shenanigans. I do like tile laying screwage.
- But I do miss the stock shenanigans, and the lack of it makes this game much less interesting than the ones in the other branch.
I like the length of play on this 18xx... But there's a bunch of restrictions that make it play very differently than the 1830 branch
