Catacombs (Third Edition)

Fun game, but is incredibly unbalanced against the players (heroes). Have never won with the standard rules. Poison is way over powered, and feels like it wasn't play tested enough in development. Needs some house rules to make it reasonable. Usually the group gets to the room before the final room and knows they have lost. Not the best feeling when the players say "We're going to lose, can we just play something else now?"

It's just that good. I love the flicking, and more and more I love the sandboxey 'create-a-difficulty' job that the dungeon master has. Building the perfect dungeon and making sure my guests have fun meshes really well with my hosting role. This one is great fun for all involved, especially when it's not taken TOO seriously.

High points: putting together a dungeon that requires heroes to get down to the very dregs of their health to defeat a very tough boss. Almost like a single-session RPG in a box.

Low points: remembering what all the icons do -- again. Game is just a tad too long for what it is.

Dec-2021: Rating dropped from 9 to 8 Only sold because I picked up [thing=194286][/thing]. Catacombs is a little tiny bit too long for what it is and it makes it hard to get to the table, consequently. I'm hopeful that C&C will be an admirable replacement :)

Definitely a step up from the original in terms of production (though the cardboard is pretty flimsy.) The core game is such a great concept, but I find that it still takes too long and the rules are terrible - way too much time spent figuring out what happens when certain situations occur. This game should take an hour and it seems to take 3.
