Great design which fixes the main flaw of werewolves (getting killed early) and adds some nice complexity (all townsfolk have special powers, but so do some baddies)
Very good social deduction. Require group of nerds.
Played this at the weekend at a local large boardgame group. Honestly it looked pretty exciting and I'm a big fan of Social Deduction style games. However, this game was absolute chaos. The numerous roles and the length of the nights meant the games went on for 1.5 - 2 hours meaning if you died you'd spend ages not doing very much. Granted you still have a vote which is a step up from Werewolf/Mafia but the amount of information players get is very little.
The demons/imps gets full information about all the roles in the game which is great if you are this player. It looks fun to be able to manipulate people into following your narrative. However, as a regular townsfolk role you get really very little information. One character, The Drunk, is conceptually quite interesting. They think
they are a different role and get information as such. The catch is the information is unreliable (because they arent that character). The only person that knows they are that character is really the demon.
This basically leads to cases where everyone just executes everyone else. Both games played that evening resulted in the demons killing everyone.
The game almost would be fun if it didn't take far too long and was overly convoluted. For the majority of the time players have their eyes closed. (probably 50% of the game time)
Simply the definitive social deduction experience. Improves on established formulas in really smart ways by giving the storyteller real agency and dead players a vital role in the final big decision. The out-of-the-box experience is daunting but rewarding - my only poor experiences have been with bad custom scripts, so be wary of anyone asking you to test their new custom!
MY FAVORITE GAME OF ALL TIME. every single time i run a game i get more and more people coming back asking to play again! this game never disappoints!
It's 10/10 to be a storyteller! There's so much fun to be had flexing your drama muscles and manipulating all the little bits and pieces to provide the best experience possible for your players.
As a player, I've also thoroughly enjoyed it, though I have much less experience in that area.
