This is an excellent game system. I've played scenarios from all three eras, each of the eras have slightly different rules - you can really see the progression of naval technology in this game. It's simple enough that you can introduce it to a newbie and get under way in 15 minutes, and for the smaller engagements, done in less than an hour. In the 3rd Ed, there's a really neat "Narrative Damage Table" which provides a bit more "flavor" when damage occurs (you roll on the table to get more detail about what the hit really did, e.g., a T (turret) hit could be "Steam lines damaged", or "Bridge/Fire Direction Hit", or even "Penetrating hit disrupts ammo distribution to turret" - adds to the flavor of the game without mucking things up with too many rules and DRs. The results can even serve as the basis for a colorful AAR writeup. They also helpfully provide conversions for proper scaling, and advice on what movement scales will work best with what ship scales. While I really appreciate the counters, many times their graphics are very faint when scaled down from the originals, so I tend to use counters from CaS or GWAS/SWWAS and use the handy ships values tables at the end of the rules. One can quibble about ratings (I have) but it's very easy to produce replacements or corrections (see my variant for Plan Red here on BGG, for example).
Rules have been swallowed and the counters mounted thanks to some BBG'ers suggestions! The game playes well...just what it is suppose to be...surface ships battling it out! The game system is quick and easy to get into, although the rules could have been a bit tighter, I was able to understand what the crator was getting accross. My older boys picked it up rather quickly....now the girlfirend is interested....can't wait!
I found mounting the ship counters on floor tiles, covering them with laminets and cutting them made them much easier to manage and move on the battlefield!
I still have a few more sheets to mount but I haven;t had to use those ships yet.
A relatively simple set of miniatures rules for tactical naval combat with enough well thought out options to achieve a fair degree of realism. Easily adapted to a hex grid to simplify measuring. I've also opted to use ships from another game rather than mount and cut out the construction paper pieces provided. I'm using the latter as an illustrated data annex from which to prepare via spreadsheet printable ship status forms. That takes surprisingly little time and is a lot slicker than stacking markers on the ships and thus blocking view of all the statistics on them.
Great game, it just needs a little gamer throught to make the play as slick as the rules.
8: Pretty simple rules. 1000 ships! (all trimmed, laminated and filed in envelopes!) Fun to play. It's a naval game after all! The rules leave a bit to the players to figure out in terms of movement conflict resolution.
