Like the game. Beautiful map. Counter art sucks.
Some interesting rules, for instance zoc in a 2-hex radius and reaction moves when moving in the ZOC. Needs thorough play to check if the game handles correctly the ACW.
I had the pleasure of beta-testing this game.
It is much deeper and more involved than your typical magazine game and takes a few plays to grasp the rules and strategy. Once you do though, it is a pretty good simulation of the ACW. The map is beautiful and forces historical or at least historically plausible operations.
Some rules could have been simplified in my opinion. For example, the reaction movement by itself is not too complicated after a few times, and rail movement is as simple as any, but combine them into reaction rail movement and I struggled. The use of both primary and secondary ZOCs, with some terrain affecting one and not the other, also could have been simplified both to make the game easier and quicker.
Be patient and put some effort into this game and it is an interesting study of ACW strategy and operations.
